I have a soft spot in my heart for people who do what they want. I was in the Seattle airport, killing time, and walked into Sub Pop Records which had a little section of children’s books. One of them was called Mary Wears What She Wants, a book about Mary Walker who was one of the first women to wear pants. She was arrested several times, but she was encouraged by her father. As a new father myself, with a six-month-old daughter, I was practically in tears with the book. Although I don’t really buy much for my daughter, I had to buy this book. I often think of my daughter growing up in a world where, unfortunately, people are going to expect certain things because she’s a woman, and I hope that she stands up and does what she wants, like Mary Walker.
