Music & Dance

The Vavages Family Band is a multi-generational band that includes second, third, and fourth generation family members, carrying on the O’odham tradition of playing waila music from the Tohono O’odham Nation. The music includes a mix of instrumental cumbia, Mexican-folk, classic mariachi, and a few original songs, while still preserving the traditional sound of waila music. With inherited talent, band members are all of the Vavages family, playing instruments that include the saxophone, accordion, violin, bass guitar, bajo quinto, electric guitar, drums, timbales and scratcher. The newer generation of family members came together in late 2024 and decided to carry on with playing the music and today they continue to celebrate the timeless rhythms of Waila music while adding their own creative twist.
