Tohono O'odham Basket Weaving

Hua Ki: was first established in 2000 and continues to become a household name for purchases of Native traditional wear and Hand-made jewelry, baskets and pottery. Shirley Molina is a member of the Tohono O’Odham nation and comes from a family lineage of basket weavers. Currently Hua Ki: is owned and operated by Shirley and her daughter Racquel. Racquel is from Oak Animal O’odham. Both women work to educate others on the types of jewelry O’Odham wore using shells, beads and baskets. They create handmade, custom and contemporary works of art to reflect ancestral wear.
Traditionally, Tohono O’odam wore necklaces of strung shells or clay beads. We design shell necklaces using medallions of yucca baskets, Horse Hair, and various types of shells strung on imitation sinew. In our mediums, we also use semi-precious stones to design contemporary native style jewelry.
