Byzantine Iconography

I practice a traditional art form found in Eastern Orthodox and Eastern Rite Catholic sanctuaries & private altars. Although not restricted to these places and gaining a wider audience, icons are either used as an aide to prayer or simply displayed for their aesthetic value. I am baptized in the Greek Orthodox Church and trained in fine arts with a BFA from the University of Arizona (1994).

I have worked in multiple media, though principally in a naturalistic genre (still life, portraits, and plein air landscapes). I began my training in iconography when I joined a workshop held at Our Lady of Guadalupe Abbey in Pecos, New Mexico (2008). Recently Ireturned from a month long odyssey in Greece, land of my father’s family, where I sought to discover “my roots” and visit the villages of my grandparents. That in itself was tremendously rewarding, but a life changing pilgrimage to Mt. Athos and the monasteries there, really sowed the seed to delve deeper into my own spiritual legacy. Relevant to this work, I recently joined a pilgrimage organized through St. Philip’s in the Hills to the Holy Land. Of course all land is holy, but I was particularly interested in seeing the landscapes and religious sanctuaries in this place where my own Christian inheritance was born. I was subsequently invited to exhibit almost forty icons that I’d “written” in the gallery space attached to St. Philip’s. (2023) I’m also featured in an online video course on Byzantine Iconography offered through Via del Dios.
