Saba Ahmadi – Henna

Mehendi is used to beautify women, much like a form of makeup. Mehendi artists paint intricate designs on the palms and feet of brides as part of the wedding ceremony. Women also use the decoration on special occasions and celebrations.

Mehendi is made from the leaves from the Henna plant. Leaves are dried and ground into a powder and mixed with tamarind water. The paste is applied to the palm using a cone-shaped tool similar to a pastry or cake decorating bag.

Mehendi dye starts to fade in 3 to 5 days and will be completely gone in 2 weeks. It is often also used as a hair dye and conditioner and is also said to have medicinal properties.
