Fernanda: Staying Connected

Fernanda. Faces of the Festival 2017. Steven Meckler photo

My parents are immigrants, born and raised in Mexico, so I was always close to my culture in that way. I was always going back and forth to Mexico, learning about indigenous people and learning about my ancestors through them. I used to think indigenous people were, not like a thing of the past, but I didn’t think it was a modern day thing. And learning how close in time that was, it was just fascinating to me. Even now people don’t think that indigenous people still exist, even here in the US. So yeah, that’s what keeps me connected, learning all that and hearing stories from my grandparents.
