Past generations utilized these types of vessels daily for cooking, water and seed storage as well as for ceremonies. I collect and process the clay. Each vessel is hand built using the paddle and anvil technique. To ensure the vessels are waterproof, they are open pit fired. Each vessel is unique, as the fire will determine the final outcome.
I am of Tohono O’odham and San Carlos Apache lineage. I began learning the art of utilitarian pottery in 2000 from Alicia Bustamonte, an elder who came from generations of potters and was one of the few remaining traditional O’odham potters. My second mentor, Reuben Naranjo Jr. helped me to continue building my foundation. Under his teachings and guidance, I began producing not only utilitarian pottery vessels but also effigy pots and whistles. I was encouraged not to give up and was reassured that great potters have humble beginnings. Today, I continue to refine my techniques as there will never be a time when I will know everything there is to know about traditional pottery.
