Flamenco Sonora

Gathering Green

Zan has been playing and singing several genres since he was a kid, but his involvement in flamenco changed his life the most: it unearthed a hidden truth about culture, family, and the invisible ties that connect us with our roots. During a visit to Granada, Spain, a mystical flamenco performance in the caves of Sacromonte moved him to tears and still haunts him to this day. Shortly thereafter, he went to New Mexico to celebrate Christmas with his long-distant grandma Pineda and only then learned that she danced flamenco in Granada and in Albuquerque, where she met his grandfather, who played flamenco guitar. As his grandma was showing him her old flamenco dresses, Zan realized that his discovery wasn’t the first of his family. It was a branch of a tree whose seed was planted a long time ago. With his newfound inspiration, he returned to Granada, where he lived with a gitana bailaora in the Albaicín neighborhood and became deeply immersed in the world of flamenco. While he was living in Granada, Zan took guitar classes at Carmen de Las Cuevas flamenco institute, but most of what he learned was from partying with friends on his balcony. Now, as he continues learning and growing with the flamenco community in Tucson, he is accompanied by the ghost of his grandmother, who reminds him that flamenco is the music of the soil.
