Arturo: I Belong Here

Arturo. Faces of the Festival 2019. Steven Meckler photo

I was born in 1952. I was born on a reservation and I’m living on another reservation. Born in Coolidge, I now live here in Pascua. I am most connected to my culture during Cuaresma, or Lent. I’m part of the color guard where we honor the dead, burying one of our ex fellow soldiers. Where do I most belong? Here with my family, my wife and my mother-in-law, and our dogs. All the kids are out of the house. I am proud of being married and serving in the army for a while, coming back alive. I took my wife to Hawaii–I’m very proud of that.
