Arturo: Helping others

Arturo. Faces of the Festival 2017. Steven Meckler photo

I am Hispanic, Latino. I come from a family of 16 brothers and sisters and I’m one of the youngest ones. I was originally raised in Mexico. My mother passed away of breast cancer when I was six months old. At age 13, I came to the United States, from Zacatecas to San Antonio, Texas. From there I moved to San Diego, California. I moved to Arizona, Tucson, two weeks ago. I am a health educator. Previously I was an ER nurse for 13 years. I’m here at the festival helping out with the Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation. What makes me feel alive is helping other people. Also, my husband and family, union.
